Oh Buddy, what fun we had together
You were there since the beginning and I was there at your end
You took the abuse of childhood me riding on your back
And not once did you retaliate or even fight back
You were the perfect dog to have as a young child
My parents loved you as much as I did and they miss you still
You were so fun to play with and comforting as well
But now you're gone, it's been many years now
I remember that sad night with the babysitter
You weren't feeling well and I was so scared
We tried to feed you and give you water
But you wouldn't eat or drink
We took you to the doctor the next day
The news was grim, we had to put you down
You were the best dog that I've ever had
The whole family loved you
You weathered 3 young kids playing with you
You lived a happy life I think
You rarely made my parents mad
We treated you well and you did the same to us
We miss you Buddy
John, what I like about your poem is it's honesty. I also like the fact that you started out with a rhyming pattern and then totally went away from that as if what you were feeling could no longer be put in restricted form! Oh and by the way, real men cry... This is a great poem!!
